[Review] Kellogg’s Frosted Flakes with Marshmallows

Let’s start off the week with some trivia, shall we? In 1952, Kellogg’s introduced Sugar Frosted Flakes to the world, with Tony the Tiger as the cereal’s mascot. “Sugar” was removed from the cereal’s name in 1983, likely to shift the focus away from an ingredient that was increasingly seen as unhealthy. Well, Tony the Tiger is now 64 years old, and clearly he’s stopped giving a damn what people think about him and his cereal. Ladies and gentlemen, Kellogg’s Frosted Flakes with Even More Sugar–I mean, Marshmallows!


I know what you’re thinking. “Why?” Well, you, my friend, are thinking too hard. See, the first thing I learned about becoming a junk food blogger is to stop thinking and start eating.

LOL I didn’t have to learn anything to do this, you guys. I’m just a guy with a camera and a web domain.

Opening the box, Frosted Flakes with Marshmallows are unassuming, both in appearance and smell. They carry the familar Frosted Flakes aroma, and look just like the plain cereal with small disc-shaped marshmallows scattered throughout. Given the name, I probably shouldn’t have expected much more. See how easy it is to overthink these things?

Stop thinking. Start eating.

I grabbed a few marshmallows and popped them in my mouth to see how they would differ from the sweet taste of Frosted Flakes. They were much more subtle than I had expected. These marshmallows aren’t overly sugary, but they provide a creamy sweetness that–in theory–could complement the standard Frosted Flakes well.

So how are they together? Sadly, not all that different from regular Frosted Flakes. The marshmallow taste becomes mostly undetectable against the already sweetened corn flakes. The most significant contribution from the marshmallows is their creamy texture, which provides a nice change among the usual crunch.


In milk, the corn flakes held their crunch well. The marshmallows softened a bit, but still retained some of their initial firmness. Surprisingly, I was able to pick up a bit more of a distinct marshmallow flavor when I added milk, too. Of course, the milk at the bottom of the bowl was the best part–150% pure sugar, baby.

The moral of this review is this: sometimes, it actually doesn’t hurt to think before you eat. I’m not sure what I was expecting, but Frosted Flakes with Marshmallows are literally nothing more than Frosted Flakes, plus marshmallows. The added ingredient isn’t terrible, but it isn’t incredible either. It’s just sort of…there. To be clear, my score for this cereal doesn’t reflect my feelings for Frosted Flakes, just this new variation. The next time I’m deciding which cereal to buy, I’ll give it a bit more thought and reach for the tried and true original–they’re great.
