[2-Pack Review] Fiber One Coffee & Donut Dough and Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough Ice Cream

A bit of housekeeping to start out tonight’s review: If you’re one of the many Snack Cellar readers (JK only my grandma reads this) who has been trying in vain to reach the blog through Google or other search engines, I apologize. We’re undergoing a bit of a facelift, and have run into some minor annoyances during the process. We’re hoping to get everything back to 100% within the next couple of days. For now though, you should be able to access everything by typing in the URL (www.snackcellar.com) and clicking around to your heart’s content. Sorry again for any broken links or error pages in the meantime. Now, on to the review.

It’s National Ice Cream Day! I figured that since Snack Cellar’s front-end coding has temporarily gone to ?, why not celebrate with a couple of pints of ice cream that will make me ? out my back end? That’s right–let’s eat some Fiber One ice cream!

Fiber One has already stolen my heart, and now it’s trying to steal some of my freezer space, too. The brand has rolled out a huge swath of new ice cream flavors, available exclusively at Hy-Vee: Creamy Vanilla, Fudge Brownie, Salted Caramel & Truffle, Sweet Lemon Pie, Mint Chocolate, Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough, and Coffee & Donut Dough. I easily chose Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough and Coffee & Donut Dough because they obviously sounded the least healthy.

First up is Coffee & Donut Dough. This ice cream is described as “low fat coffee ice cream with donut dough pieces and confectionary glaze.” There are also 5 grams of fiber per serving and probiotic cultures to promote digestion. There is also confectionary glaze to promote eating the entire pint at once.

The texture of the coffee ice cream base is fairly runny. It’s not “premium” by any means, but hopefully you’re not expecting that. The coffee taste is mellow and leaves a lot to be desired–in fact, it tasted more like caramel with a hint of coffee flavor, like a sugary iced coffee drink. The sizable donut dough pieces add a nice chew throughout, but only provide a slight doughy flavor. The confectionary glaze, sadly, isn’t detectable at all. It might have just blended in with the sweetness of the coffee ice cream, but there’s not a distinct “sweet icing” taste to be found. For a low-fat ice cream, this flavor is decent, but I couldn’t help but feel like Fiber One over-promised with this flavor.

Flavor #2 (heh) is Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough. It’s described as “low fat cookie dough ice cream with chocolate chip cookie dough chunks and cookie dough swirls.” It also has the same fiber content and probiotics but nobody cares because COOKIE DOUGH SWIRLS.

The texture of the cookie dough ice cream has the same runny quality as Coffee & Donut Dough. There’s a light vanilla taste, but it’s generically sweet–in fact, the ingredients don’t list “vanilla” at all. The cookie dough pieces aren’t quite as big as the donut dough pieces, but they’re surprisingly good: sweet, doughy, and very chocolatey. As I’d hoped, though, the real star here is the cookie dough swirl: it’s sweet and wonderfully buttery. It brings a richness to the ice cream that makes up for the otherwise bland base, and amplifies the already tasty cookie dough chunks. It’s a pleasant surprise, and a very welcome addition to this “healthy” ice cream flavor.

Overall, I enjoyed these two flavors, but would reach for Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough 10 times out of 10 if I had the choice again. I’m glad Fiber One is continuing to try their hand with new products, and I’m looking forward to trying the other ice cream flavors. Although next time, I might be better off not eating two pints in the same night…

In a Nutshell: Coffee & Donut Dough sounds appealing, but coffee flavor is mild. Donut pieces are a fun mix-in, though. Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough features a delicious cookie dough swirl to overcome a lackluster ice cream base. So many poop emojis.
