As we reach the end of 2016, you’ll see a ton of year-end posts all over the Internet. For example: “Top 10 Albums of the Year.” “The Biggest Trends of 2016.” “Dumbest Blogs That Started This Year.”
So I thought I’d take a moment to reflect, too. And since the only way I keep track of time is by counting the number of days since the last Oreo release, it only makes sense to look back on the year in new Oreo flavors. Here’s the Oreo Year in Review:
- January: Cinnamon Bun Oreos (👍), Filled Cupcake Oreos (meh)
- March: Strawberry Shortcake Oreos (blech)
- June: Blueberry Pie Oreos, Fruity Crisp Oreos, Chocolate and Lemon Oreo Thins (👏 x 3)
- July: Choco Chip Oreos (🙌)
- August: Swedish Fish Oreos (😷)
Yeah…It’s been a weird year for Oreos. The last time I checked, Swedish Fish Oreos are still the most recent new flavor this year. Does Nabisco really want to end 2016 with that taste in our mouths? No, seriously, I’ve brushed my teeth a billion times since that review and still can’t get rid of it.
Enter Milka. The European chocolatier has been cranking out ridiculous chocolate bars across the pond for years. Now, Milka and Oreo have teamed up to bring a couple of those creations stateside. The Milka Oreo Big Crunch Bar is now seeing a limited release, with nationwide availability in early 2017. The Oreo Chocolate Candy Bar, as well as an Oreo/Milka snack mix of sorts, will follow shortly after.
Full disclosure: I’m a total Milka rookie, so I have no idea what to expect despite hearing a lot of hype about the brand. After just a couple of bites, I get it. The milk chocolate is high-quality–smooth, rich, and better than, say, Hershey’s or Mars milk chocolate. I’m not saying I’ll never eat a Reese’s again (obviously, I will), but the difference is noticeable.
The creme layer is similar to that of an Oreo cookie, but seems less granular (maybe slightly whipped?) and as a result, it’s slightly less sweet. This is a good thing. It helps keep the bar from being too sugary overall. The same goes for the Oreo cookie layer: the darker, more bitter cocoa flavor stands out, and helps balance the bar’s flavors. Although this is a chocolate bar first and foremost, I do wish there was a bit more Oreo in it, especially in the outer edges of the bar that are often just chocolate and creme. But that’s a minor gripe.
Ladies and gentlemen, the Milka Oreo Big Crunch Bar has finally landed in the U.S. And you know what? It was worth the wait. Rich Milka Chocolate, the familiar Oreo creme, and of course, a crunchy Oreo cookie layer combine to make a pretty tasty chocolate bar. It’s not perfect, but it’s pretty great–and that’s a good way to end the year.
