[Review] Kellogg’s Limited Edition Frosted Sugar Cookie Pop-Tarts

Sugar cookie redemption!

No, that’s not just my old AOL Instant Messenger screen name. It’s also the theme of tonight’s review. See, I recently reviewed Sugar Cookie Pringles, which was basically just deceit in a Christmas sweater can. “It’s going to be ages before I trust the words ‘sugar cookie’ ever again,” I told myself.

Does less than two weeks count as “ages?”

If anything can restore my faith in sugar cookies, it’s sugar cookies Pop-Tarts. Kellogg’s Limited Edition Frosted Sugar Cookie Pop-Tarts are back on shelves now, and they’re already better than Sugar Cookie Pringles simply by not being made of potaotes. I’m still swooning over Caramel Apple Pop-Tarts from earlier this year, so I’ve got high hopes for these.


Opening the foil wrapper, it actually smells like sugar cookie dough–sugary with a hint of vanilla. The frosting for each Pop-Tart contains a “Printed Fun” cartoon, which tend to depict Sugar Cookie Pop-Tarts in precarious situations, just minutes from being eaten. I think this is an example of what all the kids are calling “meta” but I’m not sure because I’m just a stupid junk food blogger.

Eaten raw, Frosted Sugar Cookie Pop-Tarts are…not great. The pastry taste is the same: floury, salty, and otherwise tasteless. We’ve been over this. There’s a very slight sugary taste that comes through from the filling, but it’s not enough to overcome the pastry.


Now we’re talking! Eaten warm, Frosted Sugar Cookie Pop-Tarts are like waking up on Christmas Day and discovering that Santa is real and he brought you two of everything you wanted. The well-known pastry magic returns, softening the dough and morphing its flavor into a subtle buttery taste. The filling bursts with flavor after a few seconds in the toaster, too. It’s rich, sweet, and has notes of vanilla. It truly tastes like Kellogg’s melted sugar cookie dough into a fine goo and injected it into some toaster pastries. Am I the only one who was turned on by that last sentence? Probably.

Kellogg’s Limited Edition Frosted Sugar Cookie Pop-Tarts are excellent, but unlike sugar cookie dough, you definitely don’t want to eat these raw. But once they’ve been warmed up in the toaster, Frosted Sugar Cookie Pop-Tarts taste just like freshly baked sugar cookies. As an added bonus, they don’t taste like Pringles at all. Consider my faith in sugar cookies restored.
