It means different things to different people. For some, it might be a long walk on the beach, or a horse-drawn carriage ride with your sweetheart. For others, it could be a staying in for the night, curling up under a blanket, and watching a movie together.
For me, it’s food. The quickest way to my heart is through my stomach. And to any paramedics or firefighters who might read this duing an emergency when I’m too heavy to get up off my couch, the quickest way to me will be through all of the empty Ben & Jerry’s containers.
Nabisco has discovered yet another way to fill both my heart and my stomach with new Limited Edition Chocolate Strawberry Oreo cookies. They arrive just in time for Valentine’s Day, and are made to mimic chocolate-dipped strawberries, one of the most romantic desserts ever created. I wasn’t looking for another excuse to eat Oreos alone in my bed while listening to Seal’s “Kiss from a Rose,” but here it is.
Nabisco Limited Edition Chocolate Strawberry Oreo cookies feature the standard chocolate Oreo wafer and a dual-flavored chocolate and strawberry flavored creme. The two-tiered creme is similarly constructed to the Filled Cupcake Oreos that came out at the beginning of this year. Unlike the Filled Cupcake Oreos, there’s no “twist and lick” direction this time around. But these are Valentine’s Day Oreos, so Nabisco probably figured that part’s gonna happen anyway. 😏
Opening the package, I could first smell the familiar cocoa aroma of the Oreo wafers, and then…another familiar aroma emerged. It took me a second to place it, but then I realized it was the same strawberry smell that was so potent in Strawberry Shortcake Oreos. Yikes. Visually, the creme is brown on the outside and pink on the inside. So it looks like a chocolate dipped strawberry. Oh, Nabisco. You’re so clever.
The wafers in Chocolate Strawberry Oreo cookies carry the same classic cocoa flavor you know and love. No surprise there! Now, on to the creme.
The chocolate creme is similar to a lightly whipped milk chocolate. Frankly, it just reminds me of the regular Oreo creme with some cocoa blended in. That sweet chocolate creme is evident at first, but then an overpowering strawberry flavor manhandled my tastebuds. As I feared, the strawberry creme is exactly like the creme in Strawberry Shortcake Oreos. It tastes strongly of strawberry, sure, but it’s very sweet and reeks of artificial flavoring. As I said in my Strawberry Shortcake Oreo review, it “tastes like a McDonald’s strawberry milkshake.” In other words, not great.
I took a bite of the cookie and creme combined, and things improved a bit. The bitterness of the cocoa wafer, along with the sweetness of the chocolate creme, helps mellow out the artificial tang of the strawberry creme, letting its subtle sweetness come through a bit more. Oddly, that sweet chocolate and berry combination turns incredibly sour in the aftertaste, and it’s pretty unpleasant.
Nabisco Limited Edition Chocolate Strawberry Oreo cookies seem like a huge missed opportunity. With the right execution, these could’ve been the new seasonal Oreo that people look forward to year after year, especially on a big-ticket sweets day like Valentine’s Day. But the same strawberry creme that plagued Strawberry Shortcake Oreos is back, and not even the chocolate elements of the cookie are enough to save it. Sorry, Nabisco. This definitely isn’t a case of love at first bite.
