[2-Pack Review] Kellogg’s Dunkin’ Donuts Frosted Vanilla Latte and Frosted Chocolate Mocha Pop-Tarts

What do you get when you combine one of the world’s most popular drinks, two of America’s most recognizable brands, and a whole lot of sugar?

Damn, that was a great riddle.

With the force of a thousand apple fritters, Dunkin’ Donuts and Kellogg’s have teamed up to create two new limited edition Pop-Tart flavors. Now, I’ve got to admit that I’m still slightly scarred from the last round of beverage-themed Pop-Tarts. But I’m willing to keep an open mind for these Dunkin’ Donuts Pop-Tarts because I love coffee. Also, Pop-Tarts. Also, food in general.

Kellogg’s Dunkin’ Donuts Frosted Vanilla Latte and Frosted Chocolate Mocha Pop-Tarts are now available for a limited time. I’m pretty sad that this new partnership didn’t yield a Frosted Caramel Macchiato Pop-Tart, but I guess I’ll just have to add those to my fat kid wish list, right under Fudge Dipped Nutter Butters and Nutella Oreos. For the record, these are available at grocery stores in boxes of eight, and at Walmart in huge boxes of 16. I bought the huge boxes, because they don’t call me Mr. Value Size for nothin’.

First up: Frosted Vanilla Latte. The frosting is pretty drab at first glance, but its white and tan coloring is reminiscent of a frothy vanilla latte. The pastry is the same plain pastry used in many Pop-Tarts, heavy on the flour and slightly salty. Eaten cold, the filling leads with a sweet vanilla flavor, followed by a hint of coffee. Surprisingly, the coffee flavor struggles against the rather bland pastry, leaving an overall flavor combination that’s heavy on vanilla and pastry dough.

After a few seconds in the toaster, Frosted Vanilla Latte Pop-Tarts’ minuscule coffee flavor disappears entirely. All that’s left is the sweet vanilla filling and a softer, more buttery pastry. Frosted Vanilla Latte Pop-Tarts work just fine, thanks to their sweet vanilla filling. They just…don’t taste much like a latte. A latte typically consists of espresso, milk, sugar, and flavored syrup. These Pop-Tarts lean heavily toward those last three ingredients and really skimp on the first.

Next is Frosted Chocolate Mocha. The frosting on these is very similar to the Vanilla Latte Pop-Tarts, just with flipped colors. The pastry, however, is chocolate flavored, which I had most recently in Spookylicious Pop-Tarts. It’s still pretty floury, but the good news is that its noticeable cocoa flavor is a big improvement over the standard pastry. Eaten cold, the bitter mocha flavor is strong from the first bite and it lingers through the aftertaste. A sweet, fudgy flavor (similar to the Spookylicious filling) emerges eventually, but the mocha definitely sticks around, too.

Unfortunately, Frosted Chocolate Mocha Pop-Tarts suffer from the same diminishing coffee effect as their Vanilla Latte counterparts. The result is a fuller-flavored chocolate pastry and a gooey filling that’s mostly just chocolate, with a slight mocha taste hanging out in the background. Still, in my opinion Frosted Chocolate Mocha Pop-Tarts do a pretty good job of capturing all of the ingredients (espresso, milk, cocoa, and sugar) of an actual chocolate mocha.

Kellogg’s Dunkin’ Donuts Frosted Vanilla Latte and Frosted Chocolate Mocha Pop-Tarts didn’t exactly blow me away, but they’re welcome additions to the Pop-Tart line-up. I’ve got to give Chocolate Mocha the edge over Vanilla Latte for its faithfulness to the mocha flavor, but both are worth a try. And hey, if these sell well, we might get those Caramel Macchiato Pop-Tarts after all. I’ll keep my fat fingers crossed.

In a Nutshell: Frosted Vanilla Latte Pop-Tarts are vanilla first, latte second. Frosted Chocolate Mocha Pop-Tarts have good balance of chocolate and mocha flavor. Praying for Caramel Macchiato Pop-Tarts. I think “Mr. Value Size” might actually be an insult.
