[Review] Limited Edition Cap’n Crunch’s Blueberry Pancake Crunch

Ladies and gentlemen, I might owe Cap’n Crunch an apology.

I haven’t been the kindest person to the Cap’n in the past. In fact, I’ve been downright mean. I’ve called him a pervert and accused him of ruining Chip the Wolf’s innocence. Were these accusations against the Cap’n warranted? Probably. Is he still a creep with giant blue eyes that will haunt you in your sleep? Absolutely.

But can I resist cereal that tastes like blueberry pancakes? Never in a million years.

With new Limited Edition Blueberry Pancake Crunch, Cap’n Crunch is venturing into some uncharted waters. He’s had flavors like Caramel Popcorn and even Orange Creampop in the past, but Blueberry Pancake is a pretty complex flavor to pull off. But if I’m going to show the Cap’n that I’m sorry for being mean to him, I’ve got to give him a chance. I’ve got to keep an open mind!

Oh dammit he’s role-playing again.

Never, ever go to Crunch Forest.

The cereal pieces in Cap’n Crunch’s Blueberry Pancake Crunch are all shaped like Crunch Berries, but have a blue and beige color scheme. Opening the box, there’s a strong maple smell. I guess I won’t need this bottle of maple syrup I brought along for the review. Totally kidding, guys. I actually just keep it nearby at all times.

I popped a few of the blue cereal pieces in my mouth to start. The blue pieces carry a good blueberry flavor that’s reminiscent of Crunch Berries, but somehow more complex. They’re not quite as sweet as Crunch Berries, and that seems to give them a more “natural” blueberry flavor.

When I tried a few of the beige pieces, the first thing I tasted was corn. But after a few bites, a great maple flavor emerged with elements of brown sugar and vanilla. That’s when it all came together: the combination of the corn cereal and the maple flavoring does an excellent job of mimicking a pancake that’s been drizzled with maple syrup. Eaten together, neither the blueberry nor the maple really overpowers the other. There’s a great flavor balance here.

In milk, Cap’n Crunch’s Blueberry Pancake Crunch is still a great cereal. The milk adds to the sweetness of the blueberry, although it might weaken the maple flavor a bit. Still, the cereal pieces retain their crunch and don’t get too soggy, assuming you don’t fill your bowl to the rim with milk.

Blueberry Pancake Crunch is an impressive showing from Cap’n Crunch, and it’s a limited edition cereal that I’d definitely recommend picking up while it’s on shelves. The blueberry and maple flavors blend well and will actually conjure thoughts of a tall stack of pancakes. Well done, Cap’n Crunch. You did it. High five!

Actually, scratch the high five. I have no idea where that guy’s hands have been.
