Friday Flash Reviews are abridged reviews of new or exciting products for your end-of-week reading.
Every once in a while, I like to check out old TV commercials of products I’m reviewing. As you might have guessed, those commercials usually get pretty weird. For example, one featured an elephant assaulting a man at a zoo for some Rolos. Another starred Hannibal Lecter and an inebriated football team enjoying some Kit Kats. But in nearly a year of reviewing junk food, I don’t think I’ve ever seen a commercial quite like this one for Hostess Cupcakes:
That commercial is equal parts confusing and terrifying. Where did that squeaky Cupcake toy come from? Why does the kid steal the Cupcake, and then menacingly pretend to feed it to the doll? And who the hell at Hostess thought it was a good idea to have that doll come to life? From now on, I’ll live in fear of that doll any time I eat a Hostess Cupcake. Which is…a lot of the time.
Good news: I just took a bite and the doll hasn’t killed me yet. The cake in these Strawberry Cupcakes is identical to the cake used in Hostess’s Chocolate Covered Strawberry Cupcakes: pretty much just a moist golden cake with a trace of artificial strawberry flavor. The “strawberry” taste mostly comes through in the frosting, although it’s really sugary with very little freshness or tartness to resemble a true strawberry flavor. The frosting flirts with being too overpowering, but luckily the lighter cream filling helps cut through the sweetness a bit. Compared to Hostess’s other Cupcakes flavors, these Strawberry Cupcakes fall short–and they’re definitely not worth being assaulted by a creepy doll.
