[Special Feature] Ben & Jerry’s Cereal Splashback Flavors (Froot Loot, Frozen Flakes, and Cocoa Loco)

Last week over on the Snack Cellar Instagram page, I reviewed the brand new Ben & Jerry’s Cereal Splashback flavors, which are now available exclusively at their Scoop Shop locations. These cereal-inspired ice cream flavors are made to taste like Fruity Pebbles, Cocoa Pebbles, and Frosted Flakes. For the blog-reading crowd, last week’s Instagram reviews are compiled below in a more reader-friendly format.

Froot Loot

Froot Loot, the “Fruity Pebbles” flavor, is┬ácereal milk ice cream with a crisp fruity cereal swirl (aka Fruity Pebbles).

The cereal milk ice cream is new for Ben & Jerry’s, and to my surprise it works well–it’s sweeter than their standard vanilla, but not quite a sweet cream. It does actually taste like the milk that’s left over in your cereal bowl. The fruity cereal swirl (that huge orange glob) is spot on. It’s got an extra sweet fruity flavor, just like Fruity Pebbles. The swirl itself adds a slight grainy texture, which doesn’t mimic cereal pieces perfectly, but it works.

Simply put, I loved Fruit Loot. The fruity cereal swirl tastes exactly like Fruity Pebbles, and the cereal milk ice cream ties it all together perfectly. One note about these Cereal Splashback flavors: they don’t have the chunky mix-ins that Ben & Jerry’s are known for, and they don’t need to. They kept it simple with this new line of flavors, and it works.

Score: 9 out of 10

Frozen Flakes

Frozen Flakes is┬ácereal milk ice cream with a crisp cereal swirl. It’s supposed to taste like Corn Flakes/Frosted Flakes, so let’s hope it’s grrreat!

Just like Fruit Loot, the cereal milk ice cream is really enjoyable and more distinct than plain vanilla. The gritty cereal swirl carries a rich corn taste that, mixed with the sweet cereal milk ice cream, is identical to Frosted Flakes. It’s not as exciting as Fruit Loot’s swirl, but the flavor is straightforward and easily scoopable.

Frozen Flakes is a great flavor that tastes just like its inspiration, but it falls just below Fruit Loot in my opinion. Still, it’s a straightforward and satisfying flavor that’s definitely worth a try.

Score: 8 out of 10

Cocoa Loco

Cocoa Loco, the “Cocoa Pebbles” flavor, is chocolate cereal milk ice cream with a crisp chocolate cereal swirl.

Cocoa Loco takes the cereal milk ice cream of Fruit Loot and Frozen Flakes and adds a chocolate element. The “chocolate” is light here, but enough to provide a noticeable cocoa flavor. In addition to the cereal swirl, there are visible globs of chocolate throughout, which are rich and salty but remind me more of fudge brownies than Cocoa Pebbles. The chocolate globs tend to dominate each spoonful, which kind of defeats the purpose of the whole cereal thing.

Cocoa Loco isn’t a terrible flavor, it just seems to miss its mark. Of the three Cereal Splashback flavors, this one reminds me of its inspiration the least. Try it if you’re a huge chocolate fan; otherwise, stick with Fruit Loot or Frozen Flakes.
