[Review] Post Oreo O’s Cereal

Every fallen hero needs a story of redemption. This is Post’s.

That’s right, folks! No need to adjust your screens. Oreo O’s are back after a ten year hiatus. In their absence, I’ve just straight up been eating Oreos for breakfast. So, this cookie-flavored cereal is actually a healthy upgrade, and a sight for sore eyes after the letdown known as Honey Maid S’mores cereal.

The rebirth of Oreo O’s brings many questions. Why does the box say “new,” when they’re actually just “back?” Why did they bring back the “just O’s” version instead of the one with marshmallows? Are the 2017 Oreo O’s any different than Malt O Meal’s Cookies and Cream cereal? Post’s answer to all of those questions is that it doesn’t matter because you’re gonna buy ’em anyway. To paraphrase the late Rick James, nostalgia’s a hell of a drug.

He was talking about nostalgia. Trust me.

For the uninitiated, Oreo O’s are a crunchy chocolate cereal with a creme-flavored coating. The box boasts that Oreo O’s are “the stuff breakfast dreams are made of!” I’d argue that a different kind of dream is more fitting, but this is a family-friendly site.

The chocolate cereal reminds me of a much sweeter Oreo cookie. It’s really chocolatey, but doesn’t carry the same amount of bitterness as the actual cookie. The creme-flavored coating is rich and has a marshmallow-like sweetness to it. The coating seems to emerge about halfway through every spoonful of this cereal, providing an excellent balance of flavors. The cereal also manages to be crunchy without tearing up the roof of your mouth, Cap’n Crunch style.

Side note: I tried Malt O Meal’s Cookies and Cream Cereal last winter in a moment of longing for Oreo O’s. Months have passed since I had them, but there seemed to be less of a creme coating on the Malt O Meal version compared to these Oreo O’s. There’s a richer flavor here that Malt O Meal’s version seemed to lack.

Milk only serves to improve the Oreo O’s experience. It doesn’t dampen the strong chocolate taste, and complements the creme coating well. Perhaps the best part of the entire bowl is the milk that remains at the end, which is basically just cookies and cream soup. (You’re welcome for the free idea, Campbell’s.)

Oreo O’s have an insane amount of nostalgic hype surrounding them, and I’m happy to say that they don’t disappoint. The chocolate cereal and creme coating mimic an Oreo cookie incredibly well, and if memory serves me correctly, are an improvement over the Malt O Meal variety. I’d be curious to see how this stuff tastes with marshmallows, but I’m guessing Post is saving that for a future “LIMITED TIME ONLY–WITH MARSHMALLOWS!” version.

For now, let’s all just get high on the nostalgic flavors of Oreo O’s.
