[Review] Nabisco Limited Edition Mississippi Mud Pie Oreos

I know what you’re thinking.

“Hey, Snack Cellar, you lovable dolt! You charming dunce! You stupid idiot! Didn’t Mississippi Mud Pie Oreos come out nearly two months ago? Why are you just reviewing them now?”

Well, my wonderful yet strangely insulting readers, it’s because I had the name mixed up.

For the last two months, I thought these were Mississippi Cow Pie Oreos.

It’s an easy mistake to make, really–just three letters off! And although I’m ashamed that it took me so long to buy these, let’s be real: even though I’ve proven that I’ll eat every Oreo I can get my hands on, there are some things even I won’t touch. (Poop. I won’t touch poop.)

Limited Edition Mississippi Mud Pie Oreos are a Dollar General exclusive. They hit shelves back in May, but I was able to find them this week, so you might still be in luck if you haven’t bought them yet. Now, I’ve never had a Mississippi Mud Pie in my life, but judging from the packaging, it looks like it contains some combination of a chocolate crust, chocolate filling, and whipped cream–no poop, whew!

Mississippi Mud Pie Oreos feature a chocolate Oreo cookie with chocolate and whipped cream flavored creme. From a glance, it’s easy to wonder if these are just Filled Cupcake Oreos in disguise, or S’mores Oreos with chocolate cookies instead of graham cookies. That, my friends, is what I’m here to figure out. It’s a thankless job, but somebody’s got to do it.

The whipped cream flavored creme tastes very similar to the normal Oreo creme–if it’s different at all, it’s slightly less sweet than the standard creme. The chocolate creme is sweet with a strong cocoa flavor, like a melted down version of a Tootsie Roll. Eaten together, the creme flavors blend well together. They’re both sweet, but there’s an even balance of chocolate and sweet “whipped cream.”

Adding in the cookie doesn’t ruin the flavor balance at all, at least initially. The bitter cocoa taste of the Oreo cookie allows the sweeter chocolate and whipped creme flavors to shine. Having said that, after eating a couple, the combination of the chocolate cookie and sweet creme starts to taste pretty indistinguishable from plain Oreos.

Mississippi Mud Pie Oreos are another enjoyable limited edition flavor from Nabisco this year. The “whipped cream” flavored creme was a miss, but otherwise, the flavors work fairly well together. I’m still not convinced that these aren’t just rehashed Filled Cupcake Oreos…

But hey, at the very least, they don’t taste like cow pies. ?

In a Nutshell: “Whipped cream” flavored creme doesn’t really taste like whipped cream. Still a decent flavor balance. “Doesn’t taste like poop” is a low bar for a snack review.
