[Review] General Mills Apple Cinnamon Toast Crunch Cereal

Can somebody please tell General Mills that toast is supposed to be boring?

As breakfast cereals go, few things in history have been more turbulent than the relationship between General Mills and toast.

Just last winter, General Mills replaced the hugely popular Sugar Cookie Toast Crunch with the hugely sucky Cinnamon Star Crunch. A few months later, “Strawberry Toast Crunch” and “Blueberry Toast Crunch” crept onto shelves, indicating the end of the shiny new Strawberry and Blueberry Tiny Toast brand. And I’m still bitter over the loss of one of my all-time favorites, Peanut Butter Toast Crunch.

At this point, I’m expecting some sort of M. Night Shyamalan twist where General Mills tells me there’s no such thing as Toast Crunch cereal and I’ve just been eating oyster crackers this entire time.

Apple Cinnamon Toast Crunch cereal is on shelves now, and it is real until Bruce Willis and Haley Joel Osment tell me otherwise. It features tiny –er, miniature– toast cereal shapes dusted with cinnamon and apple pieces. The apple flavoring comes from real dried apples, according to the ingredients.

Is there an award for best smelling cereal? If not, keep an eye out for it at next year’s Snackies, and it’ll probably go to Apple Cinnamon Toast Crunch. This stuff smells like freshly baked apple crisp, and it is heavenly. I almost forgot to start eating because I was too busy enjoying the aroma.

It should come as no surprise that this stuff tastes as great as it smells. Apple is the leading flavor, and it’s wonderfully refreshing and sweet. The cinnamon kicks in eventually, and while it could be a bit stronger, I think the balance works well here. As was the case with the previous two fruity Toast Crunch flavors, the dense toast pieces provide a nice grainy platform for the other flavors to shine, and the crunchy yet airy texture is excellent.

Apple Cinnamon Toast Crunch is great in milk, too. If anything, the milk might bring out more of the sweetness of the cereal at the expense of the spicier cinnamon. But I found that lost cinnamon in the milk at the bottom of the bowl, which tasted like the breakfast equivalent of apple pie a la mode.

Needless to say, I’m okay with General Mills’ toast drama if it produces more cereals like Apple Cinnamon Toast Crunch. The apple and cinnamon flavors work well together, and the miniature cereal pieces are still some of the most addicting in the game. I highly recommend this one.

And hey, General Mills, do us all a favor and keep this one around for a while.

In a Nutshell: Apple and cinnamon flavors are great. Toast pieces remain some of the best cereal you can find in a breakfast bowl. Coming up with new Snackies. I’ll love this cereal until General Mills inevitably kills it.
