Happy National Junk Food Day! I know that sounds completely made up coming from a guy who eats this stuff all the time, but it’s true. The origin of the holiday is unknown, but that’s not important. Just make sure that you indulge in some junk food today. I also need to make sure I’m still employed after today, since I told my boss I was celebrating a holiday and wouldn’t be coming in to work. Might be time to update that résumé…
To celebrate National Junk Food Day, I’m trying Hostess Bake Shop Cupcake Cookies, one of three new bakery products from Hostess’s new Bake Shop line. As soon as I bit into a Cupcake Cookie, it instantly reminded me of one thing: SnackWell’s Devil’s Food Cookie Cakes. The deep cocoa flavor is almost identical, with the most notable difference being the added marshmallow layer in SnackWell’s cakes–Hostess’s version is just chocolate, and the vanilla squiggle doesn’t add any discernible flavor. A couple of minor gripes: the chocolate icing gets a little messy to the touch, and the cake seems drier than a plain Hostess Cupcake.
Although Cupcake Cookies capture the chocolate cake aspect of a Hostess Cupcake, I found their flavor a little one-dimensional, and ended up wanting a regular Cupcake. I liked these Cupcake Cookies, but I probably wouldn’t miss work for them again.
