[Review] Nabisco Limited Edition Apple Pie Oreos

Where has this summer gone?

As the calendar turns to September, you can literally sense the seasons changing around you, in more ways than one. Temperatures cool. Pumpkin spice and caramel apple products begin their annual grocery store takeover. And Ugg boots return to sheathe countless feet across America.

Even though I’m to see summer go, I’m also excited about one of my favorite times of the year: apple picking season! What’s not to love about going out to an apple orchard, picking your own apples, and making a bunch of stuff? You can make applesauce, apple butter, apple pie, apple crisp, apple muffins, apple dumplings, apple cider…

…I think I’m the Pvt. Bubba Blue of apples.

Apple turnovers, apple fritters, apple bread…

It looks like Nabisco has been out picking apples, too, and they turned them into new Limited Edition Apple Pie Oreos. This has been a banner year for pie-flavored Oreos, with Blueberry Pie, Key Lime Pie, and Mississippi Mud Pie Oreos all hitting shelves in recent months. I fully support the Oreo pie trend, as long as it doesn’t result in some weirdo Sour Cream & Raisin Pie Oreos, which nobody but senior citizens would enjoy.

Nabisco Limited Edition Apple Pie Oreos feature an apple pie flavored creme and a graham flavored cookie. The scent of these Apple Pie Oreos leans more toward that graham cookie, but there’s a fresh apple aroma lingering, too. They’re one of the less exciting looking Oreos in recent memory, almost monochrome.

The apple pie flavored creme, on the other hand, is anything but one-dimensional. It transitions between a tart apple flavor, the sweetness of apple pie filling, and just a hint of some baking spices like cinnamon and nutmeg. The apple pie creme isn’t heavily sweet like the creme in Blueberry Pie Oreos, nor overly tart like the Key Lime Pie creme. There’s an excellent balance of flavors going on in this creme.

Toss in the cookie, and these Apple Pie Oreos deserve a blue ribbon. As unexciting as the graham cookie is on its own, it works perfectly here. It’s floury like a pie crust, and little more. That allows the outstanding apple pie creme to emerge in all its glory. If anything, the cookie might detract a tiny bit from the tartness of the creme, but it’s still there for the most part.

Apple picking season is one of my favorite times of the year, and Apple Pie Oreos are officially one of my new favorite Oreo flavors. The apple pie flavored creme is fantastic, and the graham cookie is a solid platform to let the creme shine. Thanks for making these delicious Apple Pie Oreos, Nabisco.

I’ll gladly eat a bushel more.

In a Nutshell: Superb apple pie creme. Graham cookie works well. Trying out for the role of Bubba when they do a remake of “Forrest Gump.”
