Friday Flash Reviews are abridged reviews of new or exciting products for your end-of-week reading.
I don’t mean to bring down everyone’s mood on a Friday, but I’m having a bit of an existential crisis. I just read on the Internet, where everything is true, that 150 people die every year from coconuts falling on their head. Coconuts! That’s not all: 13 people die annually after being crushed by tipping vending machines (or as the coroner calls it, death by Cheetos). And I almost joined that list of embarrassing deaths when I nearly had a heart attack popping open the vacuum-sealed tube of Pillsbury Grands! Hot Cocoa Rolls.
Pillsbury Grands! Hot Cocoa Rolls feature a chocolate filling and marshmallow flavored icing. The “cocoa” aspect is unfortunately missing in these Hot Cocoa Rolls, as the chocolate filling is neither plentiful nor flavorful enough to stand out. I the Grands! dough is good quality for a store-bought brand, but its flavor totally overpowers the filling. Grands! S’mores Rolls had the same issue.
Having said that, the icing is actually pretty good, and instantly reminded me of Mallow Bits. It’s creamy and sweet, as icing should be, but it’s more complex than the icing you’d find on a plain cinnamon roll. Pillsbury really nailed the marshmallow aspect here.
Pillsbury Grands! Hot Cocoa Rolls are good, but they don’t live up to their hot cocoa promise. While the marshmallow icing is impressive, the chocolate filling is totally absent.
At least now I know I don’t need to risk my life opening refrigerated dough again anytime soon.
